As the days get longer and the weather warms up, it’s the perfect time to shake off the winter blues and give your pet’s health routine a seasonal refresh. But while spring brings sunshine, flowers, and more time outdoors, it also comes with a few health challenges for our furry companions.

Here are our top spring pet health tips to keep your best mate happy and healthy this season.

Spot the Signs of Seasonal Allergies

Yes—pets can have spring allergies too! Pollen, grasses, and even mould spores can trigger allergic reactions in dogs and cats, especially during the spring months.

          Common signs of allergies include:

If your pet is showing any of these symptoms, don’t wait—book a visit with us. We can help pinpoint the cause and recommend safe, effective treatments to get them feeling better fast.

Stay One Step Ahead of Fleas & Ticks

Warmer temperatures mean more time outside—and unfortunately, that also means more fleas and ticks. These little pests aren’t just annoying—they can spread disease, cause allergic reactions, and lead to more serious health problems if left untreated.

Our top tips for parasite protection:

          Reassess Diet & Weight

Spring is a great time to re-evaluate your pet’s nutrition and activity levels. With more opportunities for walks and play, it's easier to keep your pet fit and healthy—but it all starts with the right diet.

Keep your pet in top shape by:

Extra weight can lead to joint issues, diabetes, and other health concerns, so a little prevention now can go a long way.

          Schedule a Spring Grooming Session

After a long winter, many pets could use a bit of a tidy-up. Regular grooming not only helps your pet look and feel great—it also gives you a chance to spot any skin issues, lumps, or parasites early.

          Spring grooming checklist:

For longer-haired breeds or double coats, a professional groom can make a world of difference. Give us a call to book a grooming appointment or ask for local groomer recommendations.

Keep Vaccinations & Preventative Care Current

More outdoor playtime means more exposure to other pets, wildlife, and potential diseases. Spring is a great reminder to double-check that your pet is up to date on their vaccinations and routine health checks.

          We recommend:

Regular check-ups help us catch issues early—and keep your pet feeling their best all year round.

At Tanilba Bay Vet, we know that pets are not just animals—they are cherished members of the family. As they age, their needs evolve, and ensuring their health and happiness becomes even more important. That's why regular health checks for senior pets are vital to ensuring they live a comfortable and fulfilling life in their golden years.

The age at which a pet is considered "senior" depends on their species, breed, and size. Generally, small dogs and cats are considered senior around 7 years of age. Larger dog breeds may enter their senior years as early as 5–6 years old.

As your pet ages, they may face a variety of health challenges. Common issues in senior pets include:

Our senior health checks at Tanilba Bay Vet are comprehensive and tailored to meet the specific needs of your aging pet. During the consultation, we will:

At Tanilba Bay Vet, we believe that providing compassionate, high-quality care goes beyond just physical exams. Together, we can ensure your senior pet enjoys their golden years to the fullest. Schedule a senior health check today, and let’s work together to keep your beloved companion healthy, happy, and thriving!

           Arthritis and Joint Pain:

Aging pets often experience stiffness, pain, and reduced mobility due to joint degeneration. Weight management, joint supplements, and medication can help keep your pet comfortable.

           Dental Disease:

Oral health problems, such as gum disease and tooth decay, are common and can cause pain, as well as lead to other systemic health issues. Regular dental cleanings and home dental care are crucial.

           Kidney Disease:

Kidney disease is prevalent in older cats and can lead to weight loss, excessive thirst, and changes in urination. Early detection through blood and urine tests can help manage this condition.

           Heart Disease:

Older pets are more prone to heart problems. Symptoms like coughing, difficulty breathing, or fatigue may indicate heart disease, which can be managed with regular monitoring.

           Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS):

Often referred to as "pet dementia," CDS can cause confusion, disrupted sleep, and behavioral changes. While there’s no cure, treatments can help manage the symptoms and improve your pet’s quality of life.

           Cancer:

The risk of cancer increases with age. Regular health check-ups and monitoring for lumps, bumps, or unexplained symptoms help with early detection and treatment.

           Vision and Hearing Loss:

As pets age, they may experience hearing and vision loss. While these changes can’t always be reversed, simple adjustments, like verbal cues or gentle touch, can help them adapt.

           Weight and Metabolism Changes:

Senior pets may face weight gain or loss due to changes in metabolism. Customised diet plans can ensure your pet receives the right nutrition.

Perform a thorough physical exam, assessing mobility, dental health, skin condition, and more.

Run blood tests to evaluate organ function and detect any hidden health concerns.

Perform a urinalysis and measure blood pressure.

Discuss your pet's diet, behaviour, exercise, and lifestyle.

Protect your dog from heartworm disease with the Proheart injection at Tanilba Bay Vet. Learn about the symptoms of heartworm and how our preventative care can keep your pet healthy.

Heartworm disease is a serious, potentially fatal condition that affects dogs, caused by a parasitic worm called

          Dirofilaria immitis

. This disease, also known as Dirofilariasis, can lead to severe health issues and even death if not prevented or treated. At Tanilba Bay Vet, we want to ensure your dog stays healthy and protected, which is why we highly recommend the

          Proheart injection

as part of your dog’s regular health care routine.

Heartworm disease occurs when dogs are infected with heartworms, which are transmitted through mosquito bites. These worms travel through the bloodstream and settle in the heart and blood vessels, leading to serious damage. The adult worms can clog up the heart and major blood vessels, interfering with the proper function of the heart valves and limiting blood flow to essential organs like the lungs, liver, and kidneys. This can lead to organ dysfunction and other severe complications.

Heartworm disease can be devastating, but the good news is that it is entirely preventable. The Proheart injection is an effective and convenient way to protect your dog from heartworm infection.

Older pets benefit from more frequent health screenings. Regular visits help us catch early signs of illness and adjust care plans for changing needs.

Senior pets often require diets tailored to their metabolism and health concerns, such as weight management or joint support.

Provide soft bedding and easy access to favorite spots. Consider ramps or steps for pets with mobility issues.

Keeping your senior pet at a healthy weight and encouraging gentle exercise can prevent many age-related problems.

Dental disease is common in older pets. Regular teeth cleanings and check-ups can reduce pain and improve overall health.

Changes like confusion, anxiety, or reduced interaction may indicate cognitive decline or health issues — early vet visits can help.

Many senior pets develop arthritis. Ask us about safe pain relief options and supplements to keep your pet moving comfortably.

Older pets can become dehydrated easily. Ensure fresh water is always available and encourage drinking.

Senior pets may need help with grooming to keep their coat clean and skin healthy.

How Flood Waters in Tanilba Bay Can Affect Your Pets: Protecting Them from Mosquito-Borne Diseases

Learn how floodwaters in Tanilba Bay, NSW, can increase mosquito-borne disease risks for your pets. Discover prevention tips, heartworm protection, and vaccination options to keep your furry friends safe.

The recent floods in Tanilba Bay, NSW, have created numerous challenges for both our community and our pets

          .

While the immediate effects of flooding, such as property damage and clean-up, are front of mind, there are also ongoing health concerns for our furry friends—particularly in relation to mosquitoes.

Floodwaters create the perfect breeding grounds for mosquitoes, and with increased mosquito activity, there’s an elevated risk of mosquito-borne diseases affecting your pets. This blog will explain how flooding can increase these risks and highlight the vaccinations and prevention measures available to help protect your pets from these dangers.

In the wake of flooding, standing water left behind in areas that don’t usually hold water provides ideal conditions for mosquitoes to breed. This can lead to a sharp increase in mosquito numbers, especially around low-lying areas in Tanilba Bay.

What does this mean for your pets?

Mosquitoes are not just an annoyance—they can transmit diseases that are harmful to your pets, particularly

          heartworm disease

. After flooding, mosquitoes are more likely to bite pets that may be carrying the larvae of heartworms, which they can then transmit to your animals.

         In Australia,

          heartworm disease

is a major concern for both dogs and cats. While cats are less commonly infected with heartworm than dogs, they are still at risk, especially in flood-prone areas where mosquito activity increases.

In severe cases, heart failure or even death

          Other Mosquito-Borne Risks

           :
While heartworm is the primary concern, mosquitoes can also spread other diseases, including

          West Nile Virus

           and

          Ross River Virus

. Although these are less common in pets, the threat should not be ignored. Additionally,

          Japanese Encephalitis

, which has been detected in certain areas of Australia, can also be spread by mosquitoes, affecting both animals and humans.

Fortunately, there are several ways to protect your pets from the health risks associated with mosquitoes. Here’s what you can do:

          1. Heartworm Prevention Medication

The most effective way to prevent heartworm in your pets is through

          monthly heartworm prevention

. These medications are typically available in chewable tablets, topical treatments, or injections, and they work by killing the heartworm larvae before they can mature and cause damage.

           Dogs

: Year-round heartworm prevention is essential, especially in areas prone to flooding like Tanilba Bay. Don't skip monthly doses, even during the colder months when mosquitoes might seem less active.

           Cats

: While less likely to be affected than dogs, cats can still contract heartworms. A monthly preventative treatment is the best option for cats, which comes in a topical form that you apply to their skin.

          2. Vaccinations for Mosquito-Borne Diseases

Always consult your vet to determine the best heartworm prevention option based on your pet’s size, age, and health.

Currently, there are no vaccines for heartworm disease in Australia, but there are vaccinations available for other mosquito-borne illnesses that can affect pets. While vaccines for West Nile Virus and Ross River Virus aren’t generally available for pets, the following steps can help minimize risks:

           Vaccination for Leptospirosis

: While not directly caused by mosquitoes, Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection that can spread in floodwaters. Vaccination for Leptospirosis may be recommended in flood-affected areas, particularly for dogs that are at risk of swimming in contaminated water.

West Nile Virus and Japanese Encephalitis

: These diseases are rare in pets, but prevention through mosquito control is still key. Vaccines for horses are available for some of these diseases, but there are currently no vaccines for dogs or cats. However, keeping your pets indoors during mosquito peak hours (dawn and dusk) can reduce the risk.

           Remove standing water

: Empty containers, bird baths, plant trays, and gutters where water can collect. Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water, so eliminating it reduces the mosquito population.

           Install mosquito screens

: Ensure your windows and doors have properly fitted screens to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home.

           Use pet-safe mosquito repellents

: While many human insect repellents can be toxic to pets, there are some pet-safe options available. Always check with your vet before using any mosquito repellents on your animals.

           Limit outdoor exposure

: Keep your pets indoors during peak mosquito activity, which is usually at dawn and dusk. If you do let your pets outside, ensure they are supervised, and consider using mosquito nets or other protective measures.

Plaque and tartar can build up on your pet’s teeth, leading to gum disease and even tooth loss. But it’s not just about looks—oral infections can spread bacteria to vital organs like the heart and kidneys. Yikes!

          2. Healthy Gums = Healthy Body

If your pet’s mouth is full of bacteria, it can travel through the bloodstream and affect organs like the heart, liver, and kidneys. Keeping your pet’s mouth healthy helps their whole body stay in top shape.

Is your pet’s breath more “stinky socks” than “fresh spring breeze”? A professional cleaning can help get rid of that **doggy or kitty breath for good. Say hello to more cuddles!

If your furry friend has been scratching, licking, or chewing excessively, it might not just be a case of them being "itchy" – it could be a sign of a skin condition that requires attention. Skin issues are one of the most common reasons pets visit Tanilba Bay Vet Clinic, and they can stem from a variety of causes, from allergies to infections.

At Tanilba Bay Vet Clinic, we believe in getting to the root of the problem, so your pet can feel better. Here are

          5 common skin conditions

that might be behind your pet’s scratching:

Fleas are more than just a nuisance; they can trigger severe itching and hair loss, especially if your pet has a flea allergy. Regular flea prevention is the best way to avoid these pesky parasites. If your pet is scratching excessively and you notice flea dirt (tiny black specks) on their skin, it’s time for a check-up.

Much like humans, pets can suffer from seasonal allergies. If your dog or cat is constantly scratching or licking their paws, it could be due to pollen, dust mites, or other environmental allergens. This condition can also lead to secondary infections if not managed properly.

Mange is caused by microscopic mites that burrow into the skin, leading to severe itching, hair loss, and sores. It’s highly uncomfortable for your pet and can be contagious to other animals. If your pet’s itching seems relentless and you notice patches of hair loss, a vet visit is a must.

Hot spots are localized, inflamed areas of skin that become moist, itchy, and painful. They often develop when pets scratch or bite at a certain spot, leading to infection. If left untreated, hot spots can grow larger and become even more painful, so early intervention is key.

Ringworm isn’t actually a worm – it’s a fungal infection that can cause circular, bald patches on your pet’s skin. It’s also highly contagious, so if you spot these symptoms, make sure to get your pet checked out right away. Your vet will recommend treatment to clear it up and prevent it from spreading.

If you’ve noticed any of these signs or your pet seems uncomfortable, don’t wait to get them checked out. Skin conditions can worsen if left untreated, and the sooner you seek help, the quicker your pet can get relief.

At Tanilba Bay Vet Clinic, your pet’s health and comfort are our top priority. We’re here to diagnose and treat whatever might be causing that constant scratching, so your pet can get back to enjoying life!

Keeping Your Pet Happy & Dry

Learn how to keep your pet comfortable and dry in all weather conditions. Tanilba Bay Vet shares expert tips on maintaining your pet’s health, including skin care, hydration, and proper shelter. Ensure your furry friend stays happy and healthy, no matter the weather! Port Stephens

Even when it’s pouring outside, it’s still important to take your dog outside for regular potty breaks. If your dog is hesitant to go out, try using an umbrella or investing in a waterproof raincoat for pets. Frequent breaks will help avoid any "accidents" inside.

If your dog simply refuses to go outside in the rain, it might be time to set up an indoor potty area. You can use puppy pads or even a pet grass patch to create a designated spot inside the house. This will give your pet an alternative to holding it in, especially when the rain is heavy.

Sometimes accidents happen despite our best efforts. If your pet has an indoor mishap, be sure to clean it up right away. Prompt cleaning prevents any lingering smells that might encourage them to repeat the behavior. It also keeps your home smelling fresh!

Boredom can be a huge factor in indoor accidents. If your dog is stuck inside on a rainy day, make sure they get plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. Interactive toys or a quick game of fetch in the living room can help burn off some of that extra energy.

Reward your pet when they use the outdoor potty spot or the indoor potty area. Treats and praise go a long way in reinforcing positive behavior. The more consistent you are with rewarding them, the quicker they’ll catch on to the routine.

At Tanilba Bay Vet Clinic, we understand how tricky wet weather can be for both pets and their owners. By following these simple tips, you can minimize indoor accidents and keep your pet comfortable, even on rainy days.

Desexing Your Dog: What You Need to Know - Tanilba Bay Vet

At Tanilba Bay Vet, we guide you through the desexing process, tailoring recommendations based on your dog’s breed, size, and health. Learn about the benefits, risks, and the best time to desex your pet for optimal health and wellbeing.

Deciding when to desex your dog can be a complex decision, as it involves a number of factors unique to your pet’s breed, size, and health. At Tanilba Bay Vet, we understand that each pet is different, and we’re here to guide you through the process, ensuring the best outcome for your dog’s health and well-being.

The World Small Animal Veterinarian Association (WSAVA) has recently updated their guidelines on desexing, moving away from the previous blanket recommendation of desexing all dogs before sexual maturity. Now, the approach is more tailored, considering each individual pet’s circumstances to determine the optimal time for desexing. This change reflects a more nuanced understanding of how desexing impacts a pet’s health, behaviour, and development.

We recommend discussing desexing with your vet during your dog’s. This allows us to create a tailored plan that suits your dog’s specific needs.

        General Desexing Recommendations:

         (See below for breed-specific recommendations)

For some female dogs, an ovary-sparing procedure may be an option. This method involves removing the reproductive tract but leaving one ovary intact. The remaining ovary continues to produce sex hormones, which can have protective benefits for joint health and reduce the risk of some cancers in specific breeds. While this technique prevents pregnancy, reproductive infections, and most cancers, your dog will still go into heat (without bleeding) and be receptive to male dogs.

Discuss with your vet if this is a suitable option for your pet.

Desexing offers several health and behavioural benefits, including:

While desexing can reduce some testosterone-driven behaviours (like marking and aggression), it’s important to note that there’s no definitive evidence linking desexing to improved overall behaviour. For pets showing anxiety or stress, leaving some sex hormones in place may actually be beneficial. In such cases, delaying desexing until your dog is closer to one year of age could be the best approach.

While desexing has its benefits, there are also potential risks:

If your female dog is in heat, it’s best to wait

          3-4 weeks

before scheduling a spay procedure. During this time, the increased blood flow to the ovaries and uterus makes tissues more fragile, which can increase surgical risks, including bleeding. Scheduling her surgery outside of her heat cycle minimises these risks.

During emergencies, pets can become disoriented or scared, making them more likely to run away. This is why keeping their ID information updated is crucial.

In Tanilba Bay, it’s essential to take steps to prepare your home for any emergencies that might arise. Here's what you can do to make sure your pets stay safe even if you can’t be with them.

While it’s easy to feel panicked during an emergency, it’s important to stay calm. Pets can sense your anxiety and might become even more stressed in uncertain situations. Here are some calming techniques to help both you and your pet:

Once the emergency situation is over, take your pet to the vet for a health check. Floodwaters can carry diseases, and the stress of an evacuation can take a toll on your pet's physical and emotional health. Your vet will check for signs of distress, injury, or illness and can recommend any necessary treatments.

: Designate a safe area in your home where your pets can go if you’re not around. This could be a room with no windows, away from dangers like smoke or rising floodwaters.

           Pet-Proof Your Home

: Ensure your pets can’t get trapped in dangerous areas like flood-prone zones or areas with heavy debris. If you live near a bushfire-prone area, consider fireproofing your pet's environment as much as possible by keeping it clear of dry leaves and other flammable materials.

: Ensure your pet wears an ID tag with your current contact details. Include your phone number and, if applicable, a secondary contact person in case you can’t be reached.

: A microchip is one of the most reliable ways to ensure your pet is returned to you if they get lost. If your pet isn’t microchipped yet, this is a good time to arrange it with your local Tanilba Bay vet.

: If your pet has any pre-existing conditions, make sure to bring their medical records and any necessary medications. Having a list of allergies or ongoing treatments can be essential in an emergency.

           Pet Insurance Information

: Have your pet’s insurance policy information readily available, in case you need medical treatment during or after an emergency.

           Identify Safe Locations

: Find pet-friendly evacuation centres or emergency shelters in your area. Many evacuation points may not accept pets, so it’s crucial to know where you can go if you need to leave your home.

           Plan Multiple Routes

: Flooding can block certain roads, so having alternate routes for evacuation is essential. Familiarize yourself with emergency evacuation routes in Tanilba Bay.

           Keep Pets Secure

: When transporting your pets, make sure they are secure in their carriers or on a leash. If driving, have a plan to keep them calm and comfortable during the journey.

           Know Your Pet's Routine

: In a stressful situation, pets may act unpredictably. Make sure you have a plan to keep them as calm as possible during evacuation. Keep them in a familiar carrier or vehicle and maintain a quiet environment when possible.

           Food & Water

: Pack at least three days’ worth of food and water for each pet. Don’t forget bowls for feeding and drinking.

           Medication

: If your pet takes any regular medications, make sure to include them in your kit. Bring enough for at least a week, just in case you can’t access your regular vet.

           Leash & Carrier

: In case you need to evacuate, have a leash or harness ready for dogs and a carrier for cats. Ensure they are familiar with these items, as it will make it easier to move them quickly.

           First Aid Kit

: Include bandages, antiseptic wipes, tweezers, and any other basics needed to treat minor injuries.

           Waste Bags

: Bring plenty of bags to clean up after your pets, especially if you're on the move and can't always access a bathroom.

           Identification

: Keep a collar with your pet’s ID tag, and have their microchip number recorded in your emergency kit. If your pet isn’t microchipped yet, now is a great time to get it done.

Protecting Your Dog from Leptospirosis

Leptospirosis is a serious threat to dogs in Sydney. Learn how to protect your dog with vaccination, signs to watch for, and why it's crucial for pets in high-risk areas. Tanilba Bay Vet shares expert advice on prevention.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection caused by

          Leptospira

bacteria, often found in the urine of infected animals like rats, mice, and wildlife. These bacteria thrive in water and soil, particularly in warm and moist environments, and can survive for long periods. Dogs can contract leptospirosis through:

Once infected, the bacteria quickly spread through your dog’s bloodstream and can lead to severe organ damage.

Tanilba Bay’s climate and urban layout create perfect conditions for leptospirosis. Recently, there has been an increase in cases, particularly in areas like the Port Stephens, Maitland, and Newcastle. Contributing factors include:

Even indoor dogs aren’t immune, as they may come into contact with contaminated areas during walks or in your backyard.

Leptospirosis symptoms can vary but often include:

Without treatment, leptospirosis can result in kidney or liver failure and even death. Early detection and swift medical intervention are key to improving your dog’s prognosis.

Vaccination is the most effective way to protect your dog from leptospirosis. While it’s not traditionally considered a “core” vaccine, it is highly recommended for dogs living in high-risk areas like Newcastle.

New vaccines, such as Nobivac Lepto 2, offer protection against multiple strains of Leptospira , including those prevalent in Australia (L. Copenhageni and L. Bratislava). Not only does vaccination safeguard your dog, but it also helps reduce the risk of transmission to humans, as leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease.

Consider vaccinating your dog if they:

Even if your dog doesn’t fit these categories, consult your vet to evaluate their individual risk and discuss the best preventive measures.

Just like humans, cats can experience skin issues and irritations from time to time. Many cats suffer from itchy skin, particularly around their head, body, and belly, due to dermatological conditions.

The two most common culprits of these skin problems are allergies and parasites. Unfortunately, the warmer months can often make things worse, or even bring up skin issues that haven’t been noticeable before.

Although we’re still working on cracking the code to fluent cat communication (we’re getting there!), there are several behavioral and physical signs that may indicate your cat is dealing with a dermatological issue. These include bumpy spots, scaly skin, thinning or hair loss, vomiting hairballs, or excessive scratching and itching.

If you spot any of these signs in your feline friend, it’s a good idea to schedule a visit with us. The good news is that most dermatological issues in cats are treatable, and with the right care, your kitty will be back to purring happily and itching much less in no time.
